back_space books

Exploring ideas in a book context allows me to extend the boundaries of my creative practice beyond the perimeters of my current commercial work and became the motivation for setting up back_space books in 2018.

The work

The Look

The logo design takes its cues from the computer keyboard’s backspace key, a metaphor for the ebb and flow of the creative process.

Dull Ache

The Japanese phrase mono no aware (‘beauty tinged with sadness’ – the idea that there can be no real beauty without the heady scent of decay) underscores the emotion of the images.

The Treatment Room

A zine created during lockdown in Auckland, 25 March – 27 April 2020 and exhibited at the Auckland Zinefest later the same year.

Rest Areas

“O public road, you express me better than I can express myself.” – Walt Whitman. Rest Areas is a photographic travelogue of roadside stops, those with constructed picnic tables or seating, in the North Island, from 2109-2022.

The Wall Fly – Uncut

This series of images was captured on 35mm film from a single episode of Big Brother: Uncut in 2001, a publication was produced in 2018.
