back_space books

Exploring ideas in a book context allows me to extend the boundaries of my creative practice beyond the perimeters of my current commercial work and became the motivation for setting up back_space books in 2018.

The Look

The logo design takes its cues from the computer keyboard’s backspace key, a metaphor for the ebb and flow of the creative process.

Dull Ache

The Japanese phrase mono no aware (‘beauty tinged with sadness’ – the idea that there can be no real beauty without the heady scent of decay) underscores the emotion of the images.

Rest Areas

“O public road, you express me better than I can express myself.” – Walt Whitman. Rest Areas is a photographic travelogue of roadside stops, those with constructed picnic tables or seating, in the North Island, from 2109-2022.

The Wall Fly – Uncut

This series of images was captured on 35mm film from a single episode of Big Brother: Uncut in 2001, a publication was produced in 2018.
