You could say my career started early, my father taught me to draw, my mother taught me about pottery. From these early years to a more intensive period of study – three years studying visual communications design, followed up a while later with a BFA, creativity has been at the core of my life.

“You learn for yourself not for others, not to show off, not to put the other one down/ learning is your secret, it is all you have, it is the only thing you can call your own. Nobody can take it away…” Louise Bourgeois

Most of my career has been in the publishing industry in New Zealand designing and art directing books and magazines for the major publishing companies, alongside self-publishing titles under the moniker back_space_books. Storytelling is a powerful way of communicating ideas; they signpost our experiences, and make sense of what we know and who we are. Communicating a narrative through a thoughtful design process is what I do best.

Inspiration comes from many places; the French thriller, Diva, was the first time I experienced an alternative viewpoint to mainstream culture; Arvo Pärt’s Tabula Rasa the first time I heard landscape as music. I am curious; I look at art, I read, I listen to music, I cook, I take photos, I travel and I love a good road trip around the motu.

I was asked once to choose a joy in life… Flowers… no, books… yeah, books.
